On October 10th, World Pickleball Day, Senator John Lovick Is Donating the Book “Pickleball for All” to the Washington State Library in the Joel M. Pritchard Building

Joel Pritchard, a U.S. congressman and 14th lieutenant governor of Washington State, is regarded as a “Father of Pickleball.”

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON (October 10, 2022) - On World Pickleball Day, Washington State Senator John Lovick is donating eight copies of “Pickleball for All” to Sno-Isle Libraries, Everett Community College and the Washington State Library located in the Joel M. Pritchard Building on the Washington State Capitol Campus in Olympia. The book’s publisher, HarperCollins, matched Sen. Lovick’s original donation of four books for a total of eight books being donated.

Bainbridge Island, Washington, the birthplace of pickleball

Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum invented pickleball on Bainbridge Island in 1965. Bainbridge Island is a rural island located a short ferry ride from Seattle. The original pickleball court still exists and attracts tourists from around the world.

Washington’s state sport

In 2021, Washington state Sen. John Lovick, of Snohomish County, sponsored Senate Bill SB5615, which proposed making pickleball Washington's official state sport. Governor Jay Inslee signed the bill into law at the original court on Bainbridge Island on March 28, 2022. Fifty-seven years after its invention, pickleball became Washington’s official state sport.

World Pickleball Day

The World Pickleball Federation’s vision for World Pickleball Day is to ignite global excitement, highlight the inclusive nature and lifetime benefits of pickleball and raise awareness that pickleball is a multigenerational game played throughout the world. Sen. Lovick shares that vision and believes the best way to achieve this goal is to engage readers through the public library system and educate them about the sport of pickleball. What better place to start than the Washington State Library in the Joel M. Pritchard Building at the state capitol. On World Pickleball Day, Sen. Lovick will donate a book on the sport to the library in the building honoring the legislator and co-founder of Washington’s state sport, Joel M. Pritchard. Seven additional copies of the book will be donated to Sno-Isle Libraries and Everett Community College in Snohomish County.
