2023 MLP Atlanta: Orlando Squeezes Out the Win! | Ep. 26

The Rise and Fall of Pro Pickleball How questionable contracts, team drama, and rule changes are impacting the professional sport

Intro: The professional pickleball scene continues to grow at a rapid pace, with big money and big personalities flooding in. However, controversy abounds in the fledgling pro league as inflated contracts strain team budgets, players feud over roles, and rule changes seem to diminish match quality. Despite its surge in popularity, pickleball may be expanding too fast for its own good.

  1. 5:20 - Julian & Lauren Lawyer Up

The soap opera surrounding top pros Julian Arnold and Lauren Stratman reached new heights prior to the latest Major League Pickleball (MLP) event. The pair "lawyered up" and refused to play after MLB rejected their demands for more money and additional perks. Stratman in particular secured a massive contract earlier in the season that dwarfed her actual performance. According to hosts Tyler Loong and Jimmy Miller, these deals created impossible expectations. "When you have that amount of pressure on you, you're going to be expected to perform," said Miller. The lawyer ultimatum forced last-minute concessions from team owners, but Stratman failed to deliver and finished near last place.

  1. 13:10 - Challenger Recap

While Premier League captures the spotlight, the lower Challenger division also competes for glory. Heartaches emerged victorious this time, anchored by surprise standout CJ Klinger. One year ago, few predicted Klinger's rapid rise. However, his dedication and improvement demonstrate pickleball's potential for unexpected new stars with the right work ethic. On the downside, inconsistent results and surprise outcomes remain the norm. "It's just interesting that how close and like Columbus went one and two and they were minus one in games and they actually won 50.3% of the points and still only went one and two," remarked Loong about the unpredictable results.

  1. 17:45 - Premier Recap

If Challenger is unpredictable, Premier League often devolves into sheer chaos. Favorites fall, unknowns triumph, and no lead is safe. Premier matches frequently extend to the dreambreaker finale, keeping fans invested but sparking debate. "I personally don't like it. It makes it fun, it makes it entertaining for fans and spectators. But I don't think it rewards the better team," argued Miller. Loong concurred that the time-limited rally scoring format "is just really interesting to me that I mean these matches are so close." While exciting finishes entertain spectators, players question the system's ability to determine the best talent.

  1. 18:05 - Group A

Group play matched talent against turmoil, with mixed outcomes. Orlando Squeeze and Bay Area Breakers advanced, but not without surprises. Texas Ranchers faltered as superstar signing Lauren Stratman continued to struggle, seemingly crumbling under her inflated contract price. On the flip side, Breakers Etta Wright stunned with a perfect 5-0 opening day. In the end, big names and big budgets were no guarantee of big wins.

  1. 22:35 - Group B

Billed as the "group of death," Group B pitted powerhouses Chicago, Dallas, DC, and Utah in a battle for survival. DC and Chicago moved on, but Dallas and Utah's early exit shocked experts. Utah's squad boasted marquee names like Anna Leigh Waters and seemed poised for the playoffs. However, Anna Leigh could not overcome partner Lacey Schniederman, statistically the worst-ranked female player. Once again, premier talent could not overcome premier dysfunction.

  1. 29:05 - Group C

With top pick Julian Arnold's participation in doubt, Group C appeared wide open between Miami and Brooklyn. But Arnold ultimately suited up and dominated, lifting Arizona into the semis. Miami also advanced despite an injury replacement, proving picks can outplay pedigree with the right system fit. As Miller noted, chemistry sometimes trumps talent in Premier League.

  1. 41:00 - Semifinals

In the semis, DC's stacked duo of Jackie Kawamoto and Jade Kawamoto showed its class against Miami, winning handily to reach the finals. The Squeeze vs. Arizona semifinal was an instant classic and reignited concerns about the scoring system. Orlando reached match point multiple times but never finished the job, pushing the contest to yet another dramatic dreambreaker. While acknowledging the exciting finishes, Miller reiterated his belief that "the better team should win most of the time."

  1. 43:30 - Finals

DC entered the finals boasting an aura of inevitability, quickly capturing the first two matches for a commanding lead. But true to form, the Squeeze fought back and pushed the title to the limit. DC's Christian Alshon executes one of the biggest chokes in pickleball history, squandering a golden opportunity to clinch the trophy. The meltdown opened the door for a Squeeze comeback, capped by Zane Navratil's career-best mixed performance to keep Orlando's hopes alive. In the end, the deeper Squeeze roster outlasted DC's dynamic duo, culminating another rollercoaster Premier League event.

Conclusion:

Pickleball's popularity surge brings both prosperity and growing pains. Massive contracts raise expectations but strain team budgets, leading to player discontent. Uncertain rules produce epic finishes but cause consternation for competitors. Outsized personalities spark intrigue but raise fears of a dysfunctional culture. How Premier League rides these rising tides will determine if professional pickleball realizes its full potential or drowns in its own success. Tyler Loong and Jimmy Miller provide insightful firsthand commentary during these pivotal growing pains. But amid all the drama, pickleball's possibilities remain unlimited. The future lies in striking the right balance between entertainment and integrity on the biggest stage.
