Megan Fudge Scores Double Gold Victory at Atlanta Metro Open
TAMPA, FL - October 5, 2023 - Tampa, FL based professional pickleball player Megan Fudge emerged victorious from the 2023 Association of Pickleball Players (APP) Atlanta Metro Open this past weekend, capturing gold medals in both women's singles and women's doubles in a commanding performance.
The 35-year-old German native displayed her full range of skills throughout the event en route to career milestone wins. After years of steady improvement on the pro tour, Fudge earned her first-ever singles championship on the APP circuit by defeating Chilean pro Judit Castillo in an emotional four-game battle.
Fudge carried her momentum into the doubles bracket, teaming with partner Susannah Barr playing the #1 ranked duo of Parris Todd and Simone Jardim in the finals. Their finest moment came in the second game of the Championship match on center court. Fudge and Barr were down 3-10 but overcame the odds to win the nailbiter 12-10. In the 15 point tiebreaker, they beat Todd/Jardim 15-11 to complete a thrilling double dip comeback winning the match without dropping a game (11-8, 12-10, 15-11).
The back-to-back triumphs make Fudge one of the few women to ever win two medals at an APP event in a single weekend. She credited her success to an amazing support system, including husband and fellow pro Ryler DeHeart, who travel the country as a family in an RV with their two kids: Lily, 8, and JR, 7.
"Winning two intense battles on the same day is really gratifying," said Fudge. "I took it step-by-step and just kept fighting. Days like this are only possible with great people behind you."
Fudge stands at the top with 21 total medals, surpassing all other female professional athletes on the APP Tour.
Originally a promising junior tennis prospect in Germany, Fudge transitioned to pickleball just two years ago after meeting DeHeart in the U.S. Now competing professionally, her double gold performance underscores rapid improvement and dedication that position her as an emerging tour star heading into 2023.
