2023 PPA Hertz Gold Cup Interview: Alshon & Garnett Men's Doubles Finalists

Alshon and Garnett Reflect on Victory, Look Ahead to Championship Sunday at Hertz Gold Cup

Introduction: In a thrilling match that showcased their resilience and skill, Christian Alshon and Connor Garnett secured their spot in the Men's Doubles Championship Sunday at the Hertz Gold Cup. Facing formidable opponents DJ Young and Tyler Loong , the duo navigated hard spikes and strategic challenges to emerge victorious. In an exclusive post-match interview, Alshon and Garnett share insights into their game, the influence of Coach Leigh Waters, and the potential for future matchups.

1. Interviewer: Connor, starting with you, there were a lot of hard spikes from both DJ and Tyler. How were you able to reset those? Connor Garnett: Yeah, I think Christian and I, coming from singles backgrounds, brought a lot of hustle to the court. We fought hard to reach the kitchen line and made it a gritty battle. 2. Interviewer: This question is for both of you. You both have never been in a doubles final. Why do you think this was the tournament for you? Christian Alshon: We started as singles players and have been improving with each tournament. We're among the newest guys on the scene, so it was just a matter of time. Connor Garnett: Christian and I gel well, and there was a good feeling about this tournament. Stoked about it. This morning I told Christian make me change my flight and guess what he made me change it so we're going on.

Christian Alshon: Dang, right! 3. Interviewer: Christian, you had Coach Leigh Waters on the bench today. How good is she at strategizing for your personal game and with doubles as well? Christian Alshon: Coach Leigh is one of the best minds in the game. It took some time for her to coach me effectively, given our different playing styles. But with each tournament, we're getting better. Discussing strategy before every match is helping me adapt during play. 4. Interviewer: Connor, what was it like having Leigh on the bench? Connor Garnett: It's always awesome having extra support. Leigh provided great insights, kept us levelheaded, and helped us fight through tough moments. Having a coach on your side can make a significant difference in momentum. 5. Interviewer: Connor, there were a lot of out calls questioned by Tyler. Does that ever make you second guess your decision? Connor Garnett: No, you have to call it how you see it. While there were challenges, staying true to our calls is crucial. It might be frustrating, but it's part of the game. 6. Interviewer: Looking ahead, should we expect this matchup in 2024? Christian Alshon: Who knows? It might not be at the start of the year...
Connor Garnett: But it could be a dangerous matchup later on.
Interviewer: Thank you both, and congratulations on your victory. Good luck on Championship Sunday!
