2024 PPA Mesa Arizona Open Wright/Ignatowich vs Arnold/Munro

Battle of the Veterans and Young Guns: Wright/Ignatowich Fend Off Feisty Arnold/Munro

Vets prevail but 19-year-old Munro flashes brilliance in defeat

Day three of the 2024 Carvana Mesa Arizona Cup highlighted a thrilling contrast of age and experience against youth and athleticism. In the men's doubles quarterfinals, multiple-time champions and 3-seeds Matt Wright and James Ignatowich faced off against the upstart duo of Julian Arnold and 19-year-old phenom Jack Munro. While Wright and Ignatowich ultimately prevailed in three tightly contested games, the flashes of brilliance from teenager Munro stole the show.

With a nearly 30-year age gap separating them on the court, Wright/Ignatowich and Arnold/Munro battled through a contentious affair filled with fiery exchanges. The veteran Wright carried his wily experience honed over years on the pro tour, while Ignatowich unleashed his thunderous power. Across the net, Arnold flew around the court at a frenetic pace thanks to his compact 5'6" frame.

Yet all eyes focused squarely on the prodigious Munro. At just 19 years old, Munro cements his status as a rising young superstar with his performance on center stage. Alternating seamlessly between pounding left-handed drives and serving rockets with his right hand, Munro cemented his reputation as an ambidextrous phenom. After Wright and Ignatowich steamrolled their way through game one, Munro's scintillating shot-making and youthful exuberance helped Arnold mount a fierce comeback.

The teenager's speed and athleticism were unmatched, as he pulled off jaw-dropping gets no other player could even dream of. On multiple occasions, Munro somehow managed to not only return souped-up slams from Ignatowich but outright win the point. "It was nuts," commentators Adam Stone and Dave Fleming raved after witnessing Munro's sorcery. "Then right after the nuts play James just pulls one into the body again."

Despite Munro's Houdini-like escapes, Wright and Ignatowich's veteran savvy proved too much as they closed out the upstart young duo. Yet in a moment symbolic of Munro's limitless potential, he managed to elicit a rare sign of respect from the normally fiery Wright. After losing the final point, Wright walked to the kitchen line and tapped paddles with Munro in a gesture typically reserved for partners.

If Munro can compete at this level before he's even 20 years old, the future appears exceedingly bright for the daring and creative teen sensation. For now, Wright and Ignatowich advance thanks to their veteran grit and deep reservoir of experience. But the electric performance of Jack Munro on the game's biggest stage serves notice that a new crop of talent is coming for pickleball's old guard.

Match Recap:

Matt Wright/James Ignatowich Dominate Game 1 Against Julian Arnold/Jack Munro

In game one, the team of Matt Wright and James Ignatowich jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead over Julian Arnold and 19-year old Jack Munro. Ignatowich used his powerful forehand drives up the middle to move Arnold and Munro around, leading Wright to call their opponents “youngsters.” Munro showed off his ambidextrous skills, driving left-handed but serving right-handed. However, Wright/Ignatowich controlled the flow of the game with Ignatowich crushing forehands and Wright countering with solid backhands. Leading 8-3, Ignatowich hit a disguised forehand drive up the middle to go up 9-3. They closed out the game 11-3, with Wright screaming across the net at the younger Arnold.

Arnold/Munro Battle Back to Take Game 2

The start of game two was more competitive, with Arnold using his speed to attack the middle of the court. However, Ignatowich’s lethal serve and forehand quickly gave his team a 6-3 advantage. Munro also started finding more success on the left side, putting away overhead smashes to keep his team in the game. After Wright/Ignatowich went up 9-4, Arnold elevated his play, screaming loudly after big points. Arnold hit a perfectly placed backhand cross-court to make it 9-8 and Munro's athleticism kept them in rallies. Tied at 10-10, Munro dug out a ball from the kitchen with his paddle in his left-hand to somehow win the point, showcasing his superb effort. Arnold/Munro took game two, 11-8 to force a decisive third game.

Wright/Ignatowich Close Out Arnold/Munro in Game 3

In the final game, Ignatowich continued dominating with his serve, leading Wright to call it “a heat check.” Arnold had trouble returning these blistering serves, as Wright/Ignatowich cruised to a 6-2 lead. Munro again battled hard, making incredible gets despite awkward court positioning. But Wright/Ignatowich had all the answers as veteran Wright offered advice to rookie Munro, telling him “Youth and athleticism can get you to the next ball but the next one ain't coming back.” Leading 9-5, Wright struggled with easier balls, missing returns he normally makes. But Ignatowich's baseline consistency and serves proved too much, as they closed out game three, 11-6.

Key Jack Munro Highlights:

  • Displayed outstanding athleticism, speed and effort chasing down balls all over the court
  • Kept points alive with creativity including ambidextrous drives and overheads
  • Dug out a ball from kitchen with paddle in left hand and still won point
  • Forced a third game with aggressive plays at the net in game two
  • Impressive performance as a 19-year old on the big stage against veteran professionals

Jack Munro's Thunder Stuns the Queens

Well bust my britches and call me Jack,

We got ourselves a pickleball match!

In one corner the vets so bold,

Matt and James pack thunderous power.

And in the other, the young phenom

Jack Munro just 19 years old!

This ambidextrous kid came to play,

Servin' righty the Jack Munro way!

Drivin' left like a southpaw boss,

Makin' shots the others just lost.

And Julian Arnold brought the noise,

Making Matt and James less poised,

Screamin' loud after bombs he's hit,

Tilting the vets bit by bit.

Game one they mopped up quick,

Game two had the young guns ticked!

Jack Munro digging balls from hell,

Playing nutty to force game three well.

The vets steadied up to take control,

But Jack Munro just can't lose hope.

He battled on until the end,

Gaining Matt Wright’s respect, my friend!

A paddle tap earned, the kid can play,

Mark it down as a red letter day!

Though they took an L this time,

The young gun stole the dang show fine!

Kid’s got skills that make you think,

We got ourselves a future pink!
