Young Duo Claims Gold in Thrilling Pickleball Final
CHICAGO - An upstart pair of young stars captured their first doubles title in a dramatic gold medal match at the APP Chicago Open pickleball tournament. Bellevue, WA, based Vivian Glozman, 23, and Alix Truong, 18, defeated veterans Susannah Barr and Megan Fudge in a grueling three-game final that went to a tiebreaker.
"It feels amazing," said an elated Truong after the match. "This is my first women's gold. I'm so happy to do it with [Glozman] by my side."
The championship was only the third event Glozman and Truong have played together on the pro tour. But their chemistry was evident as they battled back from an early deficit in the final set to claim a 15-12 victory in the tiebreak game.
"Alex and I spent a lot of time off the court," Glozman said about developing their rapport. "That communication on the court really paid off."
For much of the match, Barr and Fudge used their veteran experience to control the tempo. "Fudge and Barr want to grind things out and slow the game down," said analyst Chad Edwards before the match.
But Glozman and Truong ultimately seized momentum with aggressive shots down the middle. "When Truong sped up, Glozman stepped in to finish," Edwards observed.
The winners stayed confident even as Barr and Fudge built an early 9-4 lead in the decisive tiebreaker. "They weathered the storm," commented fellow analyst Dominic Catalano afterward.
In the end, Truong's power and Glozman's finesse shone through. "There were huge shots from Truong and Glozman," Catalano said.
While disappointed, Barr and Fudge took solace in winning the silver medal. "A very good thing to take away," Barr said.
For the sport of pickleball, the dramatic display of rising talent signals an exciting future. Truong summed up the significance: "It sets a standard that we can be here every week."
